ODPP urges prosecutors to probe societal issues to ensure justice. Prosecutors have been urged to go beyond traditional legal practices and examine societal issues that may contribute to criminal behavior in order to ensure a more balanced justice system. The ODPP’s Nakuru Open Day, held under the theme “Mashtaka Yenye Haki na Usawa” (Justice with Fairness and Equity), brought together key stakeholders from the justice sector, including representatives from the National Police Service, the Judiciary, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and civil society organizations.

High Ranking police officers will be held criminally responsible for serious offenses committed by their juniors if Members of Parliament heed the call to amend the National Police Service (NPS) Act. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) called for the amendments following the recent emerging trend by NPS officers during their operations to conceal their identities using unmarked cars and distorting vehicle number plates. The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have released damning reports revealing how police officers wore civilian clothes, used unmarked cars and distorted police cars to enable them to commit atrocities without being identified. Sanction IG Kanja and Interior CS over police killings, MPs told. Members of Parliament have been urged to sanction Interior Cabinet Secretary and the Inspector General of Police over police misconduct during the anti-tax demonstrations. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) said the two should be held responsible for police misconduct.

IPOA Seeks to Stop Prosecution of IG Kanja Over Abuse of University Student. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) now wants the court to throw out a case in which the Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja has been sued over the assault of a first year Multimedia University student by five police officers. However, IPOA maintains that investigations are complex and cannot be rushed to meet external demands.

IPOA through its investigating officer Zacharia Nyamoti, told High Court judge Justice Chacha Mwita that it has “commenced investigations and has not refused or neglected to perform its duty as required by law”….Reports Kahawa Tungu

Court orders man to avail medical report after missing hearing. A court has ordered a man at the center of an assault case involving an American national to avail a medical report after missing a hearing. Frustrated by the lack of action, Jacqueline allegedly wrote to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), seeking intervention.

Nakuru Woman Painfully Witnesses Husband’s Murder at Home, Shares Chilling Account. Mathew Letyo, a 35-year-old man from Keinget, Nakuru county, was allegedly shot and killed by police officers who raided his home. Kuresoi South police commander Jeremiah Leyariwala said detectives visited the scene and collected witness statements.
