The Independent Policing Oversight Authority IPOA has assured residents of Ol Kalou that it will closely monitor police conduct during the upcoming by election to ensure officers discharge their duties of protecting citizens and property professionally and within the law.
Speaking during a joint press briefing at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission IEBC offices, Commissioner Kenwilliams Nyakomitah said that the Authority will deploy
monitoring officers through out the electoral period in line with the IPOA act. The officers will observe police operations to ensure law enforcement officers respect human rights and that incidents of police excesses are prevented.
The commissioner called on members of the public to support police officers as they carry out their constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order, noting that cooperation between members of the community and security agencies is essential for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Commissioner Nyakomitah also appealed to the media to remain vigilant and professionally expose any malpractice that may endanger the lives of police oficers or undermine the integrity of the election.
Further the publics were urged to promptly report any cases of police misconduct or abuse of office through the IPOA toll free telephone line – 1559 – instead of taking the law into their own hands. The Authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability, safeguarding human rights, and promoting public interest in policing throughout the by election period.
