After taking helm at IPOA as the Chairperson on September 10, Dr. Duncan Oburu embarked on meetings with the secretariat, beginning with the staff at the headquarters.
Since, he has also visited Regions – Kisumu, Kakamega and Mombasa – and interacted face to face with staff.
For those yet to meet Dr. Oburu one-on-one, the appeal of the scholar he is, would hardly escape first impression.
With ease, he refers to books in his addresses – the Alchemist, the popular novel which has been translated into more than 60 languages including the Swahili version Mualkemia by Ali Attas – comes to mind; a story he retold during his inaugural meeting with staff.
From it, he drove a lesson to staff by encouraging them to embrace IPOA as the best place that would be, despite “grass appearing to be greener on the other side of the fence.”
A simillar message the Chairperson also took to Mombasa, where he appreciated that IPOA works is not easy and can probably be dangerous, but encouraged the staff to “take advantage of obstacles and challenges so that you don’t despair but embrace them as the fuel to push you on.”
A continuation of the visits is scheduled for Nakuru on Friday and Eldoret next week while further visits are planned for Nyeri, Meru and Garissa.
On the side-lines, the Chairperson has also taken the opportunities to meet key stakeholders – national government security committees and non-governmental organisations – that operate in the areas he has visited.
