A police officer, Mark David Gitahi but known by his pseudo – Soldier Boy – was today sent behind bars after he was convicted for the murder of Mr. Esau Juma Mwanguku.
Mr Mwanguku was enjoying a drink at Rockland restaurant in Taveta town, in the company of a friend when the officer slithered to his table, drew a pistol and pulled the trigger, discharging four shots.
During the incident on March 29, 2019, he succumbed to three gunshots, which hit him on the back.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority lodged investigations and recommended to the Director of Public Prosecutions that that Corporal be charged with murder.
The DPP, after independently reviewing the evidence adduced upheld the recommendations and presented the case before the High Court in Voi. This included presenting fifteen witnesses besides other pieces of exhibits.
Today, Thursday May 12, 2026, the officer who was free had his bond cancelled upon conviction and will cool his heels at Manyani GK Prison awaiting sentencing on June 2, 2026.
